The 16th Hong Kong - Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF) Brief Report

The 16th Hong Kong - Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF) was held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre during 19-21 March 2018. The forum was organised by the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society (HKIFFS), co-organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) and the Hong Kong Motion Picture Industry Association (MPIA), and financially supported by Create Hong Kong (CreateHK) and Film Development Fund (FDF). Held concurrently with Hong Kong International Film and TV Market (FILMART) for the twelfth time, HAF was once again one of the core events of Entertainment Expo Hong Kong.

HAF is widely recognised as one of the most significant film-financing platforms in Asia. Over the three-day period, HAF attracted over 1000 leading film financers, producers, distributors and buyers from 32 countries and regions, connecting them with talented filmmakers through business meetings and seminar, pitching and networking events for potential co-production opportunities.

This year, HAF has received over 360 submissions, among which 25 projects from 13 places were shortlisted, including Cambodia, China, Czech Republic, France, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Mongolia, Russia, South Korea and Taiwan. The successful shortlisted projects come from a richly diverse field of filmmakers – young and established alike – seeking partners and funding. This year’s selections also include projects from three countries that will be represented for the first time at HAF: Cambodia, Mongolia and Russia.

On the other hand, the second edition of the Work-in-Progress Lab initiative selected 10 film projects from over 150 submissions that have completed or nearly completed shooting or production. The Lab is designed to assist filmmakers to explore post-production partners, sales agents and buyers or film festivals.

Private business meetings were arranged for the filmmakers of 25 selected HAF Projects and 10 selected Work-in-Progress Lab Projects. Participating HAF guests included film financiers, film producers, film buyers, film distributors, film festival delegates, representatives of film funds, production companies and post-production houses.
