The Hong Kong - Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF) has announced its selection of 25 Asian film projects. With veteran and up-and-coming filmmakers from all across Asia participating, HAF is a co-production market that brings together filmmakers and financiers with a mission to facilitate co-productions and co-ventures.
Organized by the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society (HKIFFS) and co-organized by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) and the Hong Kong, Kowloon & New Territories Motion Picture Industry Association Ltd. (MPIA), the Hong Kong - Asia Film Financing Forum will take place from 20 - 22 March 2007 at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre, opening with the Hong Kong International Film Festival and Asia's leading entertainment market, Hong Kong FILMART. HAF expects to welcome approximately 600 film professionals comprising of international film financiers, bankers, producers, buyers, film funding bodies and distributors.
Newly appointed HAF Director Jacob Wong expressed his excitement over the chosen projects. "This year's selection sees the further blossoming of HAF as new territories are participating for the first time. The 2007 projects are an embodiment of Asia's finest commercial and artistic filmmaking."
Acclaimed Hong Kong director, producer and film investor Mr. Raymond Wong has pointed out that "These 25 projects are representative of the many outstanding filmmaking talents in Asia, featuring big names such as Jia Zhangke, Zhang Yuan, Clara Law, Mabel Cheung, Kore-eda Hirokazu, Kurosawa Kiyoshi, E J-Yong and Kim Jee-Woon. HAF 2007 should prove to be the most exciting and fruitful yet."
Mr. Phillip Lee, Vice President of New Film Content at Celestial Pictures, believes this year's mixture of veterans and current generation of filmmakers such as Xu Jinglei, Pang Ho Cheung and Yan Yan Mak show the ever-strengthening development of Asian cinema. “To see how filmmakers from such diverse backgrounds submitting from all over Asia shows how HAF is becoming a significant film event in Asia.”
Looking back at previous editions, some of the projects that became critically acclaimed films include Tsai Ming-liang's The Wayward Cloud, Kore-eda Hirokazu's Distance Hur Jin-ho's One Fine Spring Day, E J-Yong's Untold Scandal and Hong Kong box office hits like The Touch and Dragon Tiger Gate. Three of HAF projects have been selected as official entries for the Best Foreign Language Film category of the Academy Awards; Invisible Waves (Producer Wouter Barendrecht; Director Pen-ek Ratanaruang) and The Tin Mine (Producer Yongyoot Thongkongtoon; Director Jira Maligool) represented Thailand whilst Love for Share (Producer Constantin Papadimitriou and Claude Kuentz; Director Nia Dinata) has been selected to represent Indonesia.
Recently completed HAF projects include Air directed by Zhang Yang (Chinese mainland); Lost in Beijing directed by Li Yu (Chinese mainland); Freesia(a.k.a. Freesia - Icy Tears) directed by Kumakiri Kazuyoshi (Japan) and The Drummer directed by Kenneth Bi (Hong Kong), whilst those nearing completion are Lee Kang-sheng's Help Me Eros (a.k.a. Help Me), CHANG Tsi-Chi's Butterfly and LIN Chin-je's The Longest Distance.
Several more projects are in the pre-production stage and ready to go into shoot later this year, they are: HUR Jung-ho's Hwa Jang, LIU Fen-dou's Part Ocean, Part Flame and YU Lik Wai's Plastic City.
