Successful 33rd HKIFF
paves way for the 34th edition

The 34th HKIFF will take place over 17 days next year from March 21 to April 6, 2010. Other marquee film events organized by the HKIFF Society will continue to coincide with the HKIFF. The 4th Asian Film Awards (AFA) is scheduled for March 22, 2010 while the 8th Hong Kong-Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF) will run from March 22 to 24, 2010.

The Festival this year hosted 338 films from 50 countries, which included 19 World Premieres, 17 International Premieres and 33 Asian Premieres. With a diverse choice of films to select from, the 33rd HKIFF programme was enthusiastically received by audiences, leading to 136 sold-out screenings, a 12% increase from last year. With over half a million festival-goers, festival ticket sales and attendance figures saw successful increases. Audiences were treated to a record final tally of 122 Meet-the-Audience sessions, an astounding 84% increase.

China Boosts Financing at the HAF

With an enormous 200% increase in the number of attending film financiers from Mainland China, the HAF continued to grow in importance as Asia’s most effective platform for film finance. Investors from Mainland China represented 15% of the registered guests, with the total number registered this year at 917 from 35 regions/countries, a 60% increase in paid attendees from last year. Hong Kong, Mainland China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan led the overall territories represented at HAF. There were 23 times the number of Mainland China buyers and media who made appointments with the HAF filmmakers this year compared to last year with a majority interest in Chinese-language programming.

According to an on-site survey conducted during the HAF and FILMART, 80% of respondents agreed that the HAF is important to the overall industry development and provides an effective channel for film finance.
